Donating in Ontario

Where to donate used goods in Hamilton

9 organizations in and around Hamilton that take donated furniture, clothes, appliances, kitchenware and household goods. For each one: what they take, what they refuse, and whether they will come and collect it.

Two things are genuinely Hamilton-specific and both are verified on the operators' own sites. First, Drop 'n' Shop is run by Community Living Hamilton in partnership with the City, sited at the East Mountain Community Recycling Centre at 37 Kilbride Rd — so the good things and the rest go in one trip, and donation hours there run 8am–6pm, an hour either side of the store's own 9am–5pm. Second, if you have furniture, the picture narrows fast: the only at-the-door collection this check could confirm for Hamilton is St. Vincent de Paul's Parkdale store, whose own page states free pickup across upper and lower Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, Aldershot, Burlington and Oakville. Habitat ReStore takes large building materials and furniture but does not describe a pickup service — it only publishes a pickup contact, so call before assuming. Everyone else verified here is drop-off only or silent on the question. Do not write that "most national chains refuse furniture" as a Hamilton fact: the chains whose refusal lists say that (Salvation Army, Talize, Diabetes Canada) are not all confirmed to operate here.

Verified 2026-09-24 from each organization's own website. Hours, fees, pickup areas and what is accepted change without notice — call or check their site before you load the car. We are not affiliated with any organization listed here and we receive nothing if you donate to them.

Furniture banks in Hamilton

They furnish homes for people leaving shelters, resettling, or starting over. They want good furniture and they are the most likely to collect it.

Safetynet Charities

Not stated - ask them
TakesCouches, Tables (dining, coffee, bedside), Chairs, Drawers, Lamps, Mirrors, Desks, Bookshelves
Won't takeCribs, Car seats
CollectionThere is an online form to schedule a donation pickup, but their page does not state whether donor pickup is free or which areas it covers. CRITICAL, and the researcher got this right: the $200–$400 figures on that page are DELIVERY charges paid by the families receiving furniture, not by donors. Do not let the page imply a donor fee. Confirm terms at furniture@safetynetservices.ca or 905-845-7233.
WhereNo public storefront. Hamilton is confirmed in their service area on their own page ("Mississauga, Hamilton add $50 for extra distance"), alongside Oakville, Halton and Mississauga. The researcher's charity BN number was not verified and has been removed.
Not a general public service. Works by Ontario Works / ODSP referral rather than public donation, and its $200–$400 charge is a delivery fee paid by the receiving family — not a donor pickup fee.

CollectionNo pickup service is described anywhere on their donation page — it describes taking donations to a Donation Centre, where "our Donation Attendant will be there to accept your donation."
WhereHamilton presence confirmed on their own About page, which names Hamilton among the regions they operate in. Their locator page states they operate "over 45 Donation Centres across Southern Ontario" but the interactive list does not render, so no Hamilton address could be read. WhereTheir own locations page lists 15 stores (13 in Ontario, 2 in BC) and Hamilton is one of them, but the Hamilton address and donation hours did not render. Link to https://talize.com/locations/ rather than publishing an address.

Where530 Fennell Avenue East, Hamilton, ON L8V 1S9
Not a charity. A for-profit retailer, not a charity. It pays a nonprofit partner for donated goods — the partner differs by store, so ask at the door if that matters to you.

Building materials and renovation in Hamilton

Doors, cabinets, fixtures, lumber, tools and appliances pulled out of a renovation.

TakesAppliances, Cabinetry, Sinks, New flooring / ceramic tile (minimum 80 sq. ft.), Tools, Furniture and décor merchandise, Windows and doors, Electrical items, Hardware, Housewares, HVAC, Lawn tools, Lighting, New lumber, Unopened paint, Plumbing, New siding, Six-litre toilets
Won't takeNo list of refused items is published on their site. Contact the ReStore before bringing anything large or unusual.
CollectionDOWNGRADED from the researcher's "conditional". Neither their donation page nor their ReStore page describes a pickup service, free or paid. What is on the page is a pickup contact: restorepickups@habitathamilton.ca and 905-560-6707 ext. 104. Email or call to ask whether they will collect and on what terms — do not promise readers a pickup.
WhereTwo ReStores, both addresses confirmed on their own site: 285 Nash Road North, Unit 1, Hamilton, ON L8H 7P4 and 1525 Stone Church Rd E, Hamilton, ON L8W 3P8. DO NOT PUBLISH HOURS: their own two pages contradict each other — the donation page says Mon–Sat 9am–5pm, the ReStore page says Mon–Fri 10am–6pm, Sat 9am–5pm. Tell readers to check the site or phone ahead.

Electronics in Hamilton

Working devices for reuse, and dead ones for responsible recycling.

TakesLaptops, Computers, Tablets, Smartphones
Won't takeNo refusal list is published.
CollectionDOWNGRADED from the researcher's "conditional". Their page says to email AccTech@mcmaster.ca "to arrange a pick-up or drop-off of items on campus" — that is campus collection, not a home pickup, and nothing on the page says they will come to a residential address. Email first.
WhereRun on McMaster's campus. The page states "McMaster-owned and personal technology is welcome," which is why this is included as open to the public — but it does not spell out a public drop-off point, so tell readers to email before travelling.
Not a general public service. University drop-off logistics rather than a residential donation service.

Shelters and community services in Hamilton

They take specific things for specific people. Call before you load the car — a wasted trip costs them staff time.

Good Shepherd Centres

Not stated - ask them
TakesNon-perishable food items, Lightly used and clean seasonal clothing and footwear, New socks and undergarments, Bedding and linens, Small appliances and electronics (less than 5 years old), Dishes and cookware, Toiletries and personal care items

CollectionNo pickup service is described. Two rules matter before you load the car: there is a two-bag limit on clothing donations, and "Furniture donations must be pre-approved before drop-off" — arrange that first on the number below.

Before you load the car

  • Phone first if it is bulky. Capacity changes week to week, and a sofa that cannot be accepted is a wasted trip for you and a wasted hour for them.
  • Clean it. Most refusals are about condition, not category. Textiles must be dry and odour-free or they get thrown out at the back door.
  • Take the parts. Bed frames need their hardware, and a dresser without its drawers is scrap to almost everyone.
  • Do not leave it outside after hours. Anything left at a closed door usually gets rained on, and the charity pays to dispose of it.
  • Ask about the receipt before you hand it over, not after.

Not sure it should be donated at all?

Some of what people give away is worth real money, and some of it will cost a charity money to dispose of. Photograph it and we will tell you which — including when the honest answer is that it is worth nothing and a thrift store is exactly the right place for it. We earn nothing when you donate.

Common questions

Will any of them pick it up from my house in Hamilton?
1 of the 9 organizations on this page collect from your home: St. Vincent de Paul Society — Hamilton Parkdale Store. Collection usually depends on what the item is, what condition it is in, and whether you are inside their catchment. Phone first.
Do I get a tax receipt for donated goods?
Registered charities can issue a receipt for the fair market value of a gift in kind, but many thrift operations do not issue receipts for ordinary household donations because valuing them individually is not practical. Ask before you drop off if the receipt matters to you, and do not assume.
What will nobody take?
Stained or torn upholstery, mattresses in most of the country, broken particleboard furniture, exercise equipment, cribs and car seats past their expiry, and anything that has been in a fire or a flood. Most organizations list their refusals on their own site, and the list above repeats them where they do.
Is my stuff worth money instead of donating it?
Sometimes, and it is worth thirty seconds to find out. A dead car, a garage of tools or mid-century teak can be worth real money. A sofa is usually worth nothing, no matter how good it looks. We will tell you which one you have got before you decide.
